Brentwood welcomes Steven Webb as Director of Development

The Diocese of Brentwood has appointed Steven Webb as Director of Development for a three-year fixed period. Currently director of the Brentwood Catholic Children's Society, Steven will facilitate a time of discernment, decision making and change for the Diocese, as it seeks to make best use of its resources to spread the Gospel and to offer the best possible pastoral support to Catholics across Essex and East London. His role will involve the design and management of a diocesan change plan involving clergy, lay people and other stakeholders.

Brentwood celebrates anniversary of Cathedral dedication

The 25th anniversary of the dedication of Brentwood Cathedral was marked with a special Mass on 31 May. Attended by priests and people from across the Diocese, it was celebrated by Bishop Alan Williams SM, who is approaching his second anniversary as Bishop of the Diocese of Brentwood. The homily was given by his predecessor, Bishop Emeritus Thomas McMahon, who was the moving force in the building of the new Cathedral a quarter of a century ago.

After in-depth discussions with the clergy, Bishop Alan Williams sm has invited lay people within the Diocese of Brentwood to put themselves forward to play an important role in shaping its future. The idea is that these 'stewards of the gospel' would volunteer their time and their talents to work closely with clergy, parishes and schools as part of the diocesan planning process. Appointed in each parish, a steward would, with local clergy and parishioners, assess the resources available in the parish and locally to maximise the opportunities for evangelisation

Brentwood: Bishop adopts new consultative approach

Bishop Alan Williams is demonstrating his commitment to a consultative approach in the Diocese of Brentwood with the establishment of a Cathedral Chapter of Canons who will take on the functions of the College of Consultors. He has also appointed two women religious to the Bishop's Council: Sr Margaret Soper OSU has been appointed Vicar for Consecrated Life in addition to Sr Josephine Canny OA, and both will be members of the Council. Brentwood: Diocese announces restructuring plans

Following a review, the Diocese of Brentwood has announced restructuring plans this week which will mean some redundancies at Cathedral House and Walsingham House and devolution of activities from the centre to parishes. Recently appointed Episcopal Vicar for Administration, Fr Andrew Headon, said: "The review has made clear that restructuring is necessary at the centre in order to reduce the budget deficits which have grown in recent years, along with some decentralisation which will encourage the development of local solutions for local needs.

Seven Anglican priests, six parishes join Ordinariate in Brentwood Diocese
The Diocese of Brentwood has announced that seven Anglican priests and around 300 members of six CoE parishes - three in Essex and three in East London - are planning to join the newly formed Ordinariate. Vicars in Chelmsford, Hockley and Benfleet are among those men being trained to become Catholic deacons. A seventh retired Anglican vicar is also converting.
