Watch: Bishops' prayer for Lent from the Holy Land
Watch: Bishops' prayer for Lent from the Holy Land

As we journey through Lent having made various achievable (and some fanciful) promises of abstinence, we look to the Holy Land to reflect on Christ's sacrifice and what it means to us. It's a good opportunity to contemplate the region and its people 2,000 years on. We see a land of tension and division, walls and suspicion. A group of bishops from around the world visited the Holy Land in

Bishops call for action after fifty years of occupation in the Holy Land

Fifty years of occupation demands action, is the call of the Holy Land Coordination bishops at the end of this year's meeting. Describing the occupation as a scandal that violates the human dignity of both Palestinians and Israelis, the bishops called for an end to the suffering on both sides. While many people in the Holy Land strive for reconciliation, most have now lived their entire lives under occupation, with its polarising social segregation. The bishops implored Christians in their respective countries to recognise their own responsibility for prayer, awareness and action.

Bishops delegation ends pilgrimage to Holy Land with call for action

For fifty years the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza have languished under occupation. Canadian Bishops renew protest against Israel's construction of wall through Cremisan Valley

Canada's Catholic Bishops have added their voices to a chorus of protests by church leaders and human rights groups around the world, over Israel's resumption of work building the 'security wall' through the Cremisan Valley. The route of the wall will dig deeply into Palestinian farmlands, and vineyards and orchards belonging to the Catholic Church. The Patriarch of Jerusalem said the resumption of construction is "without regard to the rights of the families of the valley" and called on the Israeli authorities to await the upcoming decision of the Supreme Court of Israel on the
