St Patrick's pupils raise funds for CAFOD

Kind-hearted pupils at St Patrick's Catholic Primary School in Kentish Town, north London, celebrated their Patron Saint in a special way this morning, with something they had been preparing for weeks. After Mass in the hall with Fr Tom Forde from Our Lady Help of Christians, they presented a cheque to CAFOD ambassador Judy Dixey for £350.16 - money which they had raised in some very imaginative ways. Children in one class were sponsored as they stood on one leg for five minutes.

Extra volunteers are needed to help support the Catholic church-run Winter Night Shelters in central London - near Victoria Station, Leicester Square and Soho. During the coldest months of the year, the shelters provide a hot evening meal, advice and support, a warm place to stay, showers and breakfast for people who would otherwise be sleeping on the city streets. Westminster: Year of Mercy closes with Way of the Cross

To mark the end of the Year of Mercy in the Diocese of Westminster, young people were invited to come to Westminster Cathedral and pray the Way of the Cross. Hundreds of people gathered together, to pray the Stations with a focus on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy that have been a continuous thread through this Holy Year. A re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross was presented by RISE Theatre and young parishioners from St Patrick's, Wapping, the parish of Youth Chaplain Fr David Reilly. Narrating the scenes were WYD pilgrims, with music led by Edwin Fawcett.

Ireland: Seventeen new seminarians welcomed at Maynooth

Yesterday, Saint Patrick's College Maynooth welcomed 17 new seminarians who have commenced their formation for the priesthood at the National Seminary. At the conclusion of the Introductory Programme in mid-September, four of the new seminarians from Northern dioceses will continue their studies at Saint Malachy's College in Belfast. London: Welcome to Spirit in the City

London's Spirit in the City festival starts this Wednesday. For the next four days, people of all cultures will be gathering for a celebration of faith in the streets and squares of the West End - and four churches: Notre Dame de France in Leicester Square, Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory in Warwick Street, Corpus Christi in Covent Garden and St Patrick's in Soho Square. American author George Weigel - best known for his biography of John Paul II - joined joined Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth in London recently at a conference to mark the Year of Faith. Weigel's latest book is 'Evangelical Catholicism', calling for a vigorous renewal of commitment to mission, centred on each Catholic having a deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as taught by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The conference was organised by the Faith Movement, one of Britain's 'home-grown' New Movements.
