Catholic Union statement on government's decision to reject child refugees

The Catholic Union has issued the following response to the UK government's decision not to implement the Dub Amendment and take in 3,000 child refugees: 'The Catholic Union regards the government's change in policy on child refugees with dismay. The argument that the policy should be dropped because it is a 'draw' for refugees is profoundly disheartening. If that argument were to be taken to its logical conclusion we would never assist anyone in trouble.

Campaigners urge Theresa May not to abandon lone child refugees + PETITION

Charities and groups working with unaccompanied child refugees have expressed grave concern after the government announced yesterday that it cancelled plans to bring 3,000 children to the UK. Phil Kerton, from Seeking Sanctuary, which works with Secours Catholique in Calais offering food, clothing and basic medical help to refugees, appealed for "individuals and faith groups to speak out, preferably by writing to their MPs and asking them to make the Home Secretary aware of their concerns."

UK government backtracks on promise to take child refugees

On the International day of Prayer and Awareness of Human Trafficking, the British government announced that it was closing a scheme to take in 3,000 unaccompanied child refugees - after accepting just 350 children. Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill said local authorities only "have capacity for around 400 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children until the end of this financial year" and said the country should be "proud" of its contribution to finding homes for refugees. So far only 200 of those children have been found homes in the UK. Another 150 are due to be placed this year.

Pope Francis appealed for better treatment of child refugees and migrants during his Angelus address on Sunday. Speaking to pilgrims gathered in St Peter's Square, the Holy Father renewed his call for prayerful and concrete solidarity with minors forced to flee their homelands - especially for the children and adolescents forced to flee on their own, without the company of parents or older relatives. "It is necessary to take every possible measure to ensure protection and defence for migrant children," Pope Francis said, "as well as their integration," into host societies.

On the occasion of the annual World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Caritas Europa joins Pope Francis in calling everyone to pay attention to the reality of child migrants, "especially the ones who are alone... who in a threefold way are defenceless: they are children, they are foreigners, and they have no means to protect themselves". Seeking Sanctuary appeals for action from everyone on child refugees

Thanks to Lord Dubs and his supporters, the 2016 Immigration Act obliges the government to take action to help unaccompanied refugee children who are already in Europe to come and resettle in the UK. But Phil Kerton and Ben Beno from the charity Seeking Sanctuary have expressed concern that time is passing and children are still on their own in potentially dangerous situations - living in poor conditions with inadequate shelter, hygiene and nutrition, missing out on education and secure home life essential to their development.
