Resources for Racial Justice Sunday

Every year Racial Justice Sunday provides Christian communities throughout Britain and Ireland with an opportunity to come together to pray for an end to racism and injustice. Thousands of churches, schools, groups and individuals mobilise their resources to find a practical response to a single theme.

The theme this year is: 'Created by God, treated like slaves: Tackling human trafficking'. Tackling human trafficking. Trafficking in human beings is a form of modern-day slavery and is a violation of human dignity and human rights. The International Labour Organisation estimates that there are 2.4 million trafficked people. These people are dehumanised, exploited and marginalised. Human trafficking profits are estimated to be between $7-12 billion (U.S. dollars) a year, making it the third most profitable criminal activity after the illegal trade in arms and drugs, although not many people are aware of this.

Therefore Human Trafficking is one of the most serious challenges that we, as a Christian community, must address and denounce. Our motivation to respond to this injustice is rooted in the scriptures. ‘God created man in His image; in the divine image God created him; male and female God created them.’ As Christians we are challenged to make our response a fundamental part of our discipleship and to act upon this by raising compassion, awareness and understanding for all those who are suffering.

This year the RJS materials on human trafficking contain a valued contribution from Sister Ann-Teresa, founder of the Medaille Trust, a charity which helps people freed from sex-trafficking. The materials were produced by the Racial Justice Network of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) and the Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ). The Racial Justice Sunday Resource packs for 2011 are being sent to all parishes, religious orders, secondary schools and Justice and Peace offices. The resources can also be downloaded at www.carj.org.uk.

If you would like to receive a resource pack by post please contact CARJ, 9 Henry Road, London, N4 2LH, 020 8802 8080 or at info@carj.org.uk. Please also contact CARJ if you need any further information or if you would like to support our work.
