London joins 'Global March to Jerusalem'

Jerusalem today

Supporters of Christians in the Holy Land in London, will be joining a protest tomorrow evening (30 March) against the illegal takeover of Palestinian land by Israel. This year, campaigners around the world are using Land Day to call attention to the imminent dangers facing Jerusalem.

This initiative, 'The Global March to Jerusalem' is being supported by international civil society and church organisations and individuals, including Nobel laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mairead Maguire.

At the protest outside the Embassy groups will be calling on Israel to recognise its responsibilities under international law to Jerusalem as a shared city, sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians and end its occupation of East Jerusalem. Protests are expected to take place in 80 cities across the world.

One community under immediate threat is Silwan, in Occupied East Jerusalem, where 1,000 residents are facing eviction, as their homes make way for the proposed “King David’s Garden” tourist park. Many have already been served with demolition notices. The UK government condemned the plans in 2011 calling them “provocative and deeply counter- productive”.

Hugh Lanning, Chair of Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: “The future of Jerusalem is vital for the future of a state of Palestine. By operating a system of segregation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing and the expansion of illegal settlements, Israel continues to marginalise Palestinians in Jerusalem.

Both the UN and The International Court of Justice hold that annexation of East Jerusalem, which is part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, is a violation of International law. The systematic demolition of Palestinian homes, building of illegal settlements and existence of the apartheid Wall to shut Palestinian communities out of the main city must cease immediately.”

The London Vigil takes place on 30 March at 5pm, opposite the Israeli Embassy, in Kensington High St, opposite Palace Green
