Volunteers needed to hand out a million cups of water during Olympics

An appeal to churches to help distribute a million free drinks of water during this summer’s Olympics has been launched by More Than Gold, the agency helping churches make the most of the 2012 Games
"At every recent Olympics the distribution of free water has been a way for Christians to show God’s love," says David Willson, CEO of More Than Gold. "During the next few months we want the churches to hit new heights in showing Christian hospitality".
Volunteers are sought for the Million Cups of Water programme, to give up a day or more to serve at one of over twenty water distribution points in London. These include transport hubs like St Pancras Station, the main pedestrian corridors and key points during the marathon events.
‘The Salvation Army are heading up this programme and need as many volunteers as possible. This is a great way for Christians to pitch in with a smile and a welcome’, David Willson explained.
The call to action also includes asking churches across the nation to run their own water centres. This can be during the Torch Relay which is now underway, during Olympic community events or cycle road races. To help in the organization of water distribution, a detailed check list is available to make it as easy for as possible for churches to set up their own water station.
