Pax Christi supports Pope Francis' call for prayer and fasting

The British Section of Pax Christi is calling on its members and supporters around the country to take up the invitation of Pope Francis to pray and fast for peace in Syria and other conflict areas this Saturday, 7 September.

Pax Christi has produced a simple resource for personal or group use, offering a reflection from Pope Francis together with a number of prayers and actions that people might take in pursuit of peace in the region.

The call to pray on 7 September is timely. Here in the UK the word's largest arms fair, Defence & Security Equipment International, is due to start at the London Excel Centre on 10th September. The arms fair welcomes the world's worst human rights abusing regimes. It brings together 28,000 international buyers and sellers. The deals that begin here fuel the arms trade the world over. Death, injury, fear and repression are exported from the arms companies on our doorstep.

Pax Christi is helping to organise a candle-lit vigil at London Excel on 9 September between 7 - 8 pm to call attention to the madness of the arms trade and to make the links between this trade and what is happening now in Syria and other conflict areas around the world.

Pax Christi is also urging members to engage with local members of parliament about the UKs involvement in the global arms trade. Pax Christi believe that we must stress the need to develop creative and hope-giving policies that use imagination and courage and do not rely and fall back on force, violence and warfare as a means of solving problems
