Petition: Cancel Trident spending - help flood victims

As severe floods and hurricane force winds continue to engulf large parts of the country - forcing more than 6,000 households to evacuate their homes and causing massive damage to businesses, farms, roads and railway lines, Christian campaigners have set up a petition calling on the UK government to abandon renewal of the Trident nuclear weapons system - estimated to cost more than 100 billion pounds, and instead use taxpayers' money to help flooded communities rebuild - and to develop flood defences so that this disaster does not repeat itself in future.

A spokeswoman from Columban JPIC said: "The current flooding highlights the security threat of Climate Change and extreme weather to civil society. Columban JPIC takes the view that 100 billion would be better spent dealing with this threat than renewing Britain’s Trident missile system, which is morally detestable."

Pax Christi, Christian CND, the Movement for the Abolition of War, (MAW) the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Columban Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) say in their petition statement:

"We urge Her Majesty's Government to cancel present and future spending on another Trident nuclear weapon system (estimated at £100 billion) and to spend some of the money saved now and in the future on coastal protection and inland flooding defences"
