Caritas water project turns Palestinian town into 'little paradise'

The Palestinian Territories suffer major problems with the supply of water. While generally, there is a severe shortage of clean water, some areas are also suceptible to serious flooding when there is a heavy rainfall.

Projects completed by Caritas Jerusalem in recent weeks have addressed and resolved major problems that were affecting the daily lives of people in two Palestinian cities.

The town of Ain Arik, less than six kilometres from Ramallah, has always suffered from a shortage of water and the impossibility of finding water which was not contaminated. Caritas Jerusalem has now built two water tanks in the city, connecting them to an extensive irrigation system. The work, which began in June 2013, was completed in seven months. The construction work also offered employment to at least 13 young people.

Fr Raed Abusahlia, Director General of Caritas Jerusalem said the project "will turn Ain Arik into a little paradise. Our dream is to extend this productive work to other villages".

In the Palestinian city of Zababdeh, in the northern part of the West Bank, the absence of a proper drainage system used to cause widespread flooding and damage to land, homes and businesses. Here Caritas Jerusalem with the support of Caritas Belgium contributed to installing a drainage system that will protect large areas in the southern part of the village from flooding. The two month project will make a great difference to the lives of more than 600 people.
