British Jews join worldwide fast for peace in the Holy Land
Today, as a response to escalation of violence in Israel, West Bank and Gaza, hundreds of British Jews are fasting against violence and in support of peace. The fast is being supported by many Rabbis from across denominations. 15th July is a Jewish fast day and this year also falls during Ramadan, a month during which Muslims fast. There are similar fasts in Israel, Palestine and all over the world with Jewish and Muslim participants. The fast within the Jewish community of the UK is organised by pro-Israel, pro-peace organisation, Yachad and has lead calls for fasts elsewhere including in the Church movement in the USA.
Hannah Weisfeld, director of Yachad said: "Through the fast, British Jews want to loudly and clearly call for de-escalation, return of calm, return to the negotiating table and the creation of two states for two peoples, the only way that can guarantee stability and security in the long run."
In the communication to their supporters informing them of the fast she said: "We must remain steadfast in our commitment to a peace that will guarantee both Israelis and Palestinians self-determination, safety and security…we ask you to fast with us."
The fast is an attempt to show that significant numbers of Anglo Jewry back the difficult steps that must be taken, including by Israel, in order to achieve peace.
