London: Mass marks 125th anniversary of Great Dock Strike

This year is the 125th anniversary of the Great Dock Strike in which Cardinal Manning (1808-1892), then the Archbishop of Westminster, played a key role in bringing to a resolution. Manning’s legacy as a great champion of the poor, the dignity and rights of workers, education and family life is still with us, most notably in the lasting contribution he made to the development of Catholic social teaching. He was, and still is, widely admired by many in London’s dock side communities.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, will be principal celebrant at a Mass of thanksgiving for Cardinal Manning this Sunday, 14 September in commemoration of the anniversary. The strike ended on this day in 1889 after negotiations between the strike leaders and the dock managers, facilitated by Cardinal Manning, led to what was locally known as ‘the Cardinal’s Peace’.

The Mass follows the Cardinal Manning Catholic Social Teaching conference organised by Caritas Anchor House and the Newham Deanery, which took place in June.
