Jordan: Christian schools welcome Iraqi children who fled Mosul & Nineveh

Among the 7,000 Christian refugees who fled from Mosul and Nineveh Plain and found refuge in Jordan, more than 1,400 are school age children. Now, thanks to the involvement of Caritas Jordan, a government committee has gathered to assist these children. It has decided to integrate the Iraqi Christian children in Christian schools in the Hashemite Kingdom.

The large-scale integration of Iraqi Christian students in Jordanian schools should begin in the school term which has just started. Because of overcrowding it was not possible to accommodate pupils in the state schools but Latin Patriarchate and other Christian schools, including those linked to the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem have offered children places.

Iraqi Christian students often have specific problems: some of them do not speak Arabic fluently and others have temporary learning difficulties because of the psychological trauma they suffered after being forced to flee their homes along with their families.

Their inclusion will take place with the involvement of the Ministry of Social Development and the support of some international NGOs engaged in helping children.
