Ten Ten Theatre launches film on modern slavery

The first Day of International Prayer and Reflection against Human Trafficking, announced by Pope Francis, was marked yesterday in London with the sell-out premiere screening of Ten Ten Theatre's new documentary film 'Bakhita's Prayer', in Covent Garden. The film explores the issue of modern slavery and the impact of the life of St Josephine Bakhita (whose feast was yesterday) through the eyes of Sixth Form students.

This 26-minute film, which has been produced with the Westminster Vocations Office, will be available for all secondary schools to use free of charge throughout Lent 2015 in assemblies and RE lessons. It will also be available to youth groups and parishes. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in a screening of this film, please register here. An accompanying Teacher Resource Pack will be available soon.

Director Martin O'Brien said: "For the past 18 months, during the production of play 'This Is My Body' and the making of this documentary film, we have had the privilege of working alongside The Medaille Trust, a Catholic charity founded by Religious Congregations which, among other things, runs safe houses for victims of modern slavery here in the UK.

"First-hand, we have witnessed how the staff and volunteers of this charity support vulnerable people - men, women and children who have endured horrific slave-like conditions - with a loving and pastoral care. These victims are from both the UK and abroad, and they have been rescued from the communities in which we live."

The financial needs of the charity are urgent and vital. Until the Government lengthens the 45-day 'reflection and recovery' period, which is the maximum amount of time that victims are given in a safe house, the charity will rely on donations in order to give the survivors the best possible support and care.

Prayer proposed for the International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking

O God, when we hear of children and adults
deceived and taken to unknown places
for purposes of sexual exploitation, forced labour, and organ 'harvesting',
our hearts are saddened and our spirits angry
that their dignity and rights are ignored through threats, lies, and force.
We cry out against the evil practice of this modern slavery,
and pray with Saint Bakhita for it to end.
Give us wisdom and courage to reach out
and stand with those whose bodies, hearts and spirits
have been so wounded, so that together we may
make real your promises to fill these sisters and brothers
with a love that is tender and good.
Send the exploiters away empty-handed
to be converted from this wickedness,
and help us all to claim the freedom
that is your gift to your children.
Amen.
