Chile: Bishop leads delegation to area devastated by floods
A Caritas and diocesan group led by Mgr Celestino Aós Braco OFM Cap, Bishop of Copiapó, has visited an area in Chile severely hit by affected by landslides and flooding. Heavy rains, flooding and landslides have claimed the lives of 12 people and more than 19 are missing. At least 748 people have lost their homes and over 5000 people who have had to evacuate the area because of the threat of further landslides.
Areas most affected are the Antofagasta and the Atacama Desert in th north of the country. In many towns there is no drinking water or electricity. Temporary camps have been set up to welcome those who have lost their homes, in particular children and the elderly.
After the visit, Mgr Aós expressed his concern over looting and traders who are taking advantage of the shortages to boost their prices. He said: "I cannot understand how there can be people, in the midst of these tragedies, that want to take advantage of the situation, this is despicable behaviour. As a society we have to be united and honest, without depriving the most vulnerable of material goods, because in doing so we take away their hope, which is much worse."
In a message Pope Francis expressed his closeness to the people. The message reads: "Due to the severe flooding affecting areas of Peru and Chile, and which have caused casualties and heavy damage to property, the Holy Father is offering prayers for the eternal rest of the deceased and calls for the Lord to grant consolation and strength to those affected by this disaster. "The Holy Father furthermore exhorts all institutions and all people of good will, motivated by sentiments of fraternal solidarity and Christian charity, to provide assistance in order to overcome these difficult times."
