Holy Land: Children's summer camp in Bethlehem

Around 200 children between the ages of six and 13 attended this year's summer camp in Bethlehem, funded by the Italian Episcopal Conference and led by a team of enthusiastic educators, coordinator Sister Anna, and Father Lwai, a Franciscan friar of the Custody of the Holy Land .During the final party, attended by parents, relatives and neighbours, the children had the opportunity to present all of the things they learned during the weeks of activities: dances, songs, plays and objects made during the workshops.

For the duration of the summer camp the children enjoyed recreational and educational activities such as dancing, theatre, group games and sports ‒ especially soccer and basketball ‒ and practical activities. There were days of swimming and outings, as well as time for reflection during which the children were able to experience the Christian faith. There was always a high level of collaboration between the educators and the children, some of whom were always ready and willing to participate in the games, while others enthusiastically received the proposals made to them.

Federica, a young volunteer who has chosen to devote her summer to the projects of Association pro Terra Sancta, recounts her experience: "Initially I felt very disoriented, because everything was already in place and it was up to me to take the first step and blend in. But it was only a question of a few days, after which everything went very well. The main difficulty was to communicate with the children, as most of them only spoke Arabic, so that I wasn't able to easily move about, but what surprised me was that each day they were always trying to make direct contact with me, for example teaching me a few words of their language. It is always nice to see children full of joy and enthusiasm, especially when their living situation is something altogether different. It really has been a beautiful experience, tiring but very interesting, because I was able, to a certain extent at least, to relate to their own reality, their history, and this allowed me to become even more attached to them."

This has been a very important time for the children of Bethlehem, inasmuch as their daily life is greatly influenced by the socio-political context in which there are very few opportunities such as this for experiencing growth and having fun.
