Nigeria: Missionary priest killed in ambush


A Claretian missionary priest was killed in Nigeria on Friday, 15 August. Fr Dennis Osuagwu was shot dead in Nekede, in the southeast of the country, after his car was highjacked on the Nekede Avu Road.

The General House of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known as the Claretians after founder St Anthony Claret said in a statement: "At the moment we have no further information regarding the circumstances of our brother's death".

The Claretian Missionary who was serving in the archdiocese of Owerri, in southern Nigeria, was also on the staff of Imo Polytechnic School, in Enwerem. Local police have opened a murder investigation.

Students said Fr Osuagwu was "one of their finest teachers" who had no enemies.
