Scotland: Nightfever reaches Oban
Nightfever continues to spread in Scotland, reaching St Columba's cathedral, Oban, in the diocese of Argyll & the Isles on Saturday evening. As with all Nightfever events, the evening centred on Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in a church made beautiful with candlelight and music. While some volunteers stayed in the church praying and interceding, others invited passers-by to come inside. Passers-by respond to a simple invitation to step inside a church and light a candle but are in fact stepping into the presence of the Lord; a moment of grace.
Nightfever runs regularly in St Aloysius in Glasgow, perched above the busy city centre thoroughfare that is Sauchiehall Street, and so St Columba's Cathedral in Oban certainly presented a very different location but Nightfever's particular form of gentle evangelisation was as blessed as ever. Scottish Coordinator, Mairi-Claire McGeady, was delighted with how it all went. "It has got to be one of the most beautiful settings yet for a Nightfever event. Mgr MacNeil, who is the Diocese Administrator, invited the Nightfever team to come into the diocese. He knows how many holiday-makers walk along the esplanade in front of the cathedral and thought it would work. He was right!"
As always with Nightfever there were moving stories of the affects this invitation has on people; the young man who comes in hesitantly and is still there half an hour later; the mother who hastily texts her children to get them to join her in the church; the lady who becomes emotional because it was the anniversary of her husband's death. These are the little stories that leave everyone who takes part feeling blessed, encouraged and with their faith strengthened by seeing the Lord so clearly at work.
Nightfever is a youth initiative that grew out of the World Youth Day in Cologne in October 2005. Inspired by the spirit of joy that WYD had brought to their city two students planned a one off event of prayer, adoration and music. The idea enthused others and now Nightfever runs in 70 cities in Germany and has spread to countries around the world. A hallmark of these events is that they are led by young people.
