CAFOD launches email campaign on vulnerable Syrian refugees

CAFOD has launched an email campaign enabling the Catholic community to contact David Cameron directly and ask that the UK plays its part resettling a fair share of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees.

While a third of the refugees making the harrowing journey to Europe have fled the conflict in Syria, many more have stayed in the region, where neighbouring countries have taken in millions. In contrast the UK has offered resettlement to only a tiny proportion of those most in need.

While commending the role the UK has taken in providing humanitarian assistance, CAFOD is amplifying its calls for the UK to do more than provide aid, by offering a home to the most vulnerable refugees fleeing Syria.

Neil Thorns, Director of Advocacy at CAFOD, said: "We have all been moved by the images of Syrians risking their lives and those of their children to reach a place of safety in Europe, and with no end to the conflict in sight, the reality is we can expect this awful situation to continue. The UK's response can't be limited to humanitarian assistance. We must do all we can to protect those in need and as Catholics we believe that includes welcoming our brothers and sisters who need protection."

The email sent directly to the Prime Minister David Cameron asks him to heed the message of Pope Francis, increase the amount of resettlement places being offered and seek a peaceful political solution to the conflict. In addition CAFOD supporters can donate to help its Caritas partners across Europe who are working directly with vulnerable refugees. A prayer shared by CAFOD for those wishing to pray for the refugees has been viewed over 25,000 times on social media.
