India: Carmelite nun killed in Kerala

Carmelite Sister Amala Valummel, who was found dead in Lisieux convent in Palai, in Kerala, a state in South India on Thursday, 17 September. She was 69 years old. The local Church has expressed sorrow and shock at the tragic incident. A spokesman said theyhope the police can identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Sister Amala was found dead in her room by the sisters who cam to look for her after she did not attend morning Mass.

According to the police, the nun had several head injuries. Police suspect she was killed during an attempted robbery.

The sisters reported that about 500 rupees are missing in a room next to Sister Amala's. The police are interrogating the staff in the convent and some workers who were working on the restoration of the building. The nun was from Ramapuram near Palai.

Amala is the daughter of late V D Augusthy and Ely of Valummel house, Ramapuram near Pala.

Her funeral took place on Friday.
