Cuban Cardinal welcomes forthcoming visit by President Obama

Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega spoke in Havana about the decision of US President Barack Obama to travel to Cuba in March. Obama announced that he will travel to the island on 21 and 22 March. He is the first US president in office, to visit Cuba since 1928.

Cardinal Ortega, who was a 'special messenger' in the process of involving the Pope in the negotiations between the United States and Cuba, told Reuters news agency that "Obama's visit is something important for the country."

"This visit to Cuba is very significant. It has a practical importance because it will be of help to the development of the country, for the people," said the Archbishop of Havana.
