Celebration to mark Golden Jubilee of Anglican Centre in Rome
Throughout 2016, The Anglican Centre in Rome celebrates its 50th Anniversary with many special events to give thanks for the enormous improvement in Anglican - Roman Catholic relations and to recommit to working together under the leadership of Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin Welby.
On 22nd March 2016 the 50th Anniversary of the dedication will be celebrated at a Eucharist at 12.30pm at St Andrew by the Wardrobe in the City of London to mark the 50th Anniversary of the dedication of the centre by Archbishop Michael Ramsey. The Celebrant will be the Archdeacon of London Diocesan Representative ACR for Two Cities Area of London assisted by The Reverend Marcus Walker Associate Director of The Anglican Centre in Rome; the Homily will be delivered by the Reverend Barry Nichols Secretary ACR, former Governor. ALL WELCOME. At 12.45pm there will be a Eucharist at The Anglican Centre in Rome.
On 29th May 2016 there will be a Day of Prayer throughout the Anglican Communion for The Anglican Centre in Rome.
On 14th June 2016 there will be a Service of Celebration of the 50th Anniversary at Westminster Abbey at 5pm - Preacher the Archbishop of Canterbury
On 5th and 6th October 2016 there will be a major celebration in Rome of the opening of the Centre, including a Colloquium on the developments in Anglican- Roman Catholic relationships and events involving the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury - details later
On 22nd March 1966 the Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop Michael Ramsey, began the first official visit of an Archbishop of Canterbury to the Pope since before the Reformation. This visit lead to the creation of the first ever official dialogue, the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC), between the two communions since their separation. One of Archbishop Michael Ramsey's first acts on 22nd March 1966 was to dedicate The Anglican Centre in Rome
On 24th March 1966 Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Ramsey signed a Common Declaration and Pope Paul gave the Archbishop of Canterbury his episcopal ring. On 5th October 1966 the Centre was formally opened by Cardinal Willebrands.
