London: Sage Tea and Sunshine - images from Palestine

An exhibition of images: Sage Tea and Sunshine - an alternative view of Palestine, by photographer Madeleine McGivern opened at the Travelling Through Bookshop in 131 Lower Marsh, Waterloo, SE1 7AE. last Friday.

Madeleine lived and worked in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza as a human right monitor for three months, and then was a member of Christian Aid's Middle East programme team in Palestine and Israel for over four years.

While news reports often portray the hardship and tragedy of life in modern Palestine, Madeleine says in this exhibition she wants to record the beauty of the landscape and the humanity and warmth of the Palestine people in their families and daily lives.

Madeleine said: "The exhibition is not designed to shy away from what is happening in Israel and Palestine and the illegal occupation, or indeed away from problems within Palestinian society- instead it is designed to simply present an alternative view, which does justice to the beauty and resilience of the place and the people I have met, who showed me their wonderful country, welcomed me with amazing hospitality and taught me so much about the strength of the human spirit."

The exhibition runs to 3 June. Opening hours are 9.30am- 6.30pm Monday-Friday and Saturday 11am - 6.30pm. Prints and cards are available to buy. A percentage of the profits will go to the EAPPI programme.
