Pope's message to Argentina on 200th anniversary of independence

On the eve of celebrations for Argentina's 200th anniversary of independence from Spain, Pope Francis sent greetings and a message to the bishops, national authorities and all the Argentine people.

Pope Francis said he hoped the celebrations would make the country stronger "in the path begun by our elders 200 years ago. He assured them of his prayers and invited them "not to sell the Motherland" and to resist "all forms of colonisation."

Pope Francis wrote: "I hope this celebration will strengthen us on the path taken by our elders 200 years ago. With these wishes, I intend to express my closeness to the Argentinian people and assure them of my prayers." The Pope said he especially wanted to be close "to those who are suffering the most: the sick, those living in poverty, those in prison, those who feel alone, those who are jobless and needy, those who are or once were victims of human trafficking and exploitation, children who have been abused and the many young people who suffer the scourge of drugs." All these people are the "homeland's most afflicted children."

He continued: "Yes, children of the homeland. At school we were taught to refer to it as the Motherland, to love the motherland. This is where the root of patriotic sentiment lies: in the love for the motherland. In Argentina we have a bold and sometimes quirky expression to refer to people without scruples: "this guy's even capable of selling his own mother". But we know, deep down that a Mother is never for sale, you can't sell your Mother... and neither can you sell the Motherland."

The Pope then mentioned Argentina's 200-year journey, its hopes and a sense of yearning for fraternity, which extended beyond the country's borders: "until the Great Homeland which San Martín and Bolivar dreamed of. This reality unites us in a family with broad horizons and fraternal loyalty. This is the Great Homeland we pray for during today's celebration: may the Lord protect her, give her strength and defend her from all forms of colonisation."

"With this 200 year history we are asked to keep walking, look forward." Pope Francis said this goal can be achieved thanks to the elderly and the young. "I would like to ask the elderly, who have a good memory of history, to look beyond this throwaway culture that has been forced upon us and dare to dream. We need their dreams, they are a fount of inspiration. I ask young people not to live a retired life in a bureaucratic quietism..

"I am convinced that our country needs to live the prophecy of Joel (cf. Jl 4: 1). Only if our grandparents encourage our young people to dream and prophesy great things, will the country be free. We need dreamers grandparents who dream and motivate young people inspired in those same dreams who in turn run forward with the creativity of prophecy.inspired by these very dreams." ,

The Pope concluded: "Dear brother ask God, our Father and Lord, bless our country, bless us all; and the Virgin of Lujan that, as a mother, take care of us on our way. And please, do not forget to pray for me."

En una carta dirigida al presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal Argentina, en la víspera de la celebración del Bicentenario de la Independencia, el Papa Francisco ha enviado sus saludos y un mensaje a los obispos, autoridades naciones y a todo el pueblo argentino.

Querido hermano:
En vísperas de la celebración del bicentenario de la lndependencia quiero hacer llegar un cordial saludo, a vos, a los hermanos Obispos, a las Autoridades nacionales y a todo el Pueblo argentino. Deseo que esta celebración nos haga más fuertes en el camino emprendido por nuestros mayores hace ya doscientos años. Con tales augurios expreso a todos los argentinos mi cercanía y la seguridad de mi oración.

De manera especial quiero estar cerca de los que más sufren: los enfermos, los que viven en la indigencia, los presos, los que se sienten solos, los que no tienen trabajo y pasan todo tipo de necesidad, los que son o fueron víctimas de la trata, del comercio humano y explotación de personas, los menores víctimas de abuso y tantos jóvenes que sufren el flagelo de la droga. Todos ellos llevan el duro peso de situaciones, muchas veces límite. Son los hijos más llagados de la Patria.

Sí, hijos de la Patria. En la escuela nos enseñaban a hablar de la Madre Patria, a amar a la Madre Patria. Aquí precisamente se enraiza el sentido patriótico de pertenencia: en el amor a la Madre Patria. Los argentinos usamos una expresión, atrevida y pintoresca a la vez, cuando nos referimos a personas inescrupulosas: "éste es capaz hasta de vender a la madre"; pero sabemos y sentimos hondamente en el corazón que a la Madre no se la vende, no se la puede vender... y tampoco a la Madre Patria.

Celebramos doscientos años de camino de una Patria que, en sus deseos y ansias de hermandad, se proyecta más allá de los límites del país: hacia la Patria Grande, la que soñaron San Martin y Bolívar. Esta realidad nos une en una familia de horizontes amplios y lealtad de hermanos. Por esa Patria Grande también rezamos hoy en nuestra celebración: que el Señor la cuide, la haga fuerte, más hermana y la defienda de todo tipo de colonizaciones.
Con estos doscientos años de respaldo se nos pide seguir caminando, mirar hacia adelante. Para lograrlo pienso -de manera especial- en los ancianos y en los jóvenes, y siento la necesidad de pedirles ayuda para continuar andando nuestro destino. A los ancianos, los "memoriosos" de la historia, les pido que, sobreponiéndose a esta "cultura del descarte" que mundialmente se nos impone, se animen a soñar. Necesitamos de sus sueños , fuente de inspiración. A los jóvenes les pido que no jubilen su existencia en el quietismo burocrático en el que los arrinconan tantas propuestas carentes de ilusión y heroísmo. Estoy convencido de que nuestra Patria necesita hacer viva la profecía de Joel (cf. Jl 4, 1). Sólo si nuestros abuelos se animan a soñar y nuestros jóvenes a profetizar cosas grandes, la Patria podrá ser libre. Necesitamos de abuelos soñadores que empujen y de jóvenes que -inspirados en esos mismos sueños- corran hacia adelante con la creatividad de la profecía.

Querido hermano pido a Dios, nuestro Padre y Señor, que bendiga nuestra Patria, nos bendiga a todos nosotros; y a la Virgen de Lujan que, como madre, nos cuide en nuestro camino. Y, por favor, no te olvides de rezar por mí.
