Pakistan: NCJP expresses condolences on bombings in Peshawar

The National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP), an organisation of Pakistan Catholic Bishops' Conference and a Pax Christi International member organisation, strongly condemns the two horrific incidents of suicide bombing in Kyber Pakhtunkwa province, i.e., the Mardan District Court bombing and the bombing in a Christian colony near Warsak Dam, Peshawar, on 2 September 2016.

The prompt response by the law enforcement and security agencies saved hundreds of lives in the Christian colony in Peshawar. All four suicide bombers were shot in a joint operation by Pak Army, Frontier Corps and police, and the situation had been secured. In this attack, one Christian person lost his life and two private security guards and one constable were seriously injured.

The tragedy against the law community continues as the Kyber Pakhtunkwa province is also in mourning following the heart-wrenching attack on the Mardan District Court. As per news reports, the attack has killed over 12 people and more than 52 are injured, including police officers and lawyers.

His Excellency Bishop Dr. Joseph Arshad, Chairperson of NCJP (Bishop of Faisalabad) and Mr. Cecil Shane Chaudhry, Executive Director of NCJP in a joint statement said that killing innocent people is an inhuman act and totally unacceptable. They appreciated the efforts of security agencies on the prompt action taken against the terrorists. Furthermore, they emphasized that the government of Pakistan needs to build proper security measures in order to ensure the right of life for all citizens.

They highlighted the fact that Kyber Pakhtunkwa province has faced multiple terrorist attacks over the past 15 years and stated that the Commission and the Christian community stands firmly with the people of Kyber Pakhtunkwa in this hour of need.

They further stressed that these tragic incidents have caused bereavement throughout the country. While praying for the deceased people, they extended their condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
