Philippines: Pax Christi joins #16DAYS against gender-based gun violence

On Friday Pax Christi in the Philippines began the '16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence' campaign, which runs to 10 December. This is the 25th year of the campaign. The Center for Peace Education-Miriam College (CPE-MC), Pax Christi-Pilipinas and the Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg in South Africa, members of the IANSA Women's Network, have 'Wear Orange Sunday' campaign on Sunday, 27 November and Sunday, 4 December.

Why Sunday? The organisers say: "The campaign was originally meant to target church-goers. If you are not, you are still invited to wear orange or something orange on these Sundays."

Why orange? "Because orange is the color that hunters use in the woods to protect themselves. We want to be protected from gun violence, as well!"

Why take a stand against gender-based gun violence? "Domestic violence, armed conflicts and guns are lethal combinations. Armed conflicts are sustained by gun proliferation and women suffering from domestic violence are eight times more likely to be killed if there were firearms in the home."

"So stand against gender-based gun violence! Wear orange on 27 November and 4 December to show solidarity for victims as well as with the call to prevent and stop gender-based gun violence. Encourage your family and friends to do the same!"
