London: Chance to buy gifts made by Women in Hebron

Women in Hebron, who produce stunning embroidery, traditional woven products and other handicrafts, have a stall at St James' Church, Piccadilly in London from today (Thursday) to Saturday this week. If you are looking for unique, beautiful gifts - this is the place to come.

Women in Hebron is a Palestinian nonprofit fair trade cooperative under the Idna Cooperative Association for Embroidery and Handicrafts. Idna is a mid-sized Palestinian city of around 25,000 people, southwest of Hebron in the West Bank.

The co-op was established to help enable women in Hebron district to provide for themselves and their families through the production and sales of Palestinian handicraft items. Their work began in 2005, when Nawal Slemiah, began selling items in the Old City souq of Hebron. Since then Women in Hebron has grown from a small table in the market to a permanent fixture in the Old City. Now 120 women from towns and villages sell their work through the co-op. The Association has now been able to open a small community centre in the village of Idna, where members can gather together to do their work, take part in educational programs, and socialize with their peers.
