Bristol: Catholic school to take part in university scholarship pilot

St Bede's Catholic College in Bristol has been chosen to take part in a revolutionary new scheme that could see many of the UK's brightest young people make it to the country's top universities.

The Bristol Scholars Scheme was launched on Thursday 15th December, at St Bede's by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bristol, Hugh Brady. The College is just one of eleven schools selected to take part in this pilot.

Also in attendance is the Secretary of State of Education the Rt Hon Justine Greening and Rebecca Clarke, Regional Schools Commissioner for the South West.

The scheme is designed to get local pupils into one of the country's top universities, pupils who would have otherwise been discouraged for reasons such as
fees, anxiety about moving away from home or them being the first in their family to get to university.

The Bristol Scholarship Scheme will see five pupils selected by teachers at St Bede's who have the academic ability to make it to the University of Bristol - one of the top ten universities in the UK.

Not only will they receive tutoring in their weakest subject, they will have their first year of university fees waived and be given £3750 living allowance annually (dependent on parental income).

All the scholars will get a preferred offer, for example two grades below the normal offer in at least one subject and ten week's tuition in preparation for A Level examinations. They will also be part of an outreach programme which has numerous benefits including a mentor to see them through their first year at university.

Catherine Hughes, Principal of St Bede's Catholic College commented: "This is an absolutely fantastic development for our College. St Bede's has an incredibly strong track record of developing social mobility, and the Bristol Scholarship Scheme.

"In fact, in our first year more than 40% of our pupils were from families where they were the first generation to go to university.

"It's important that we see this scholarship programme as a genuine engine for social mobility and not as charity. All five of our scholars are incredibly bright young people who would benefit significantly from this fantastic opportunity."
