Bishop Harvey's work for children lives on

The Catholic Childrens Society has issued the following statement: Bishop Philip Harvey 1915-2003 Bishop Harvey, who died on Sunday 2nd February after a long illness made a significant and enduring contribution to the Diocese of Westminster both as an Auxiliary Bishop and as head of the Catholic Children's Society. Jim Richards, the Society's Director said: "Bishop Harvey joined the then Crusade of Rescue as Assistant Administrator in 1953, became its executive head in 1963 and then on being created Bishop was Chairman from 1977 until 2001, a period of nearly 50 years of devoted service to children". Bishop Harvey's influence in Catholic Child Care extended beyond Westminster, particularly in the field of adoption, where he was a member of the Houghton Committee which reformed adoption legislation in the mid 1970s. For this and other work he was awarded the OBE in 1973. Long associated with the former north pastoral area of the Diocese, a fitting tribute to his concerns to help children and families in need can be seen in the Society's Bishop Harvey Family Service based at Hendon. This unique service is a beacon of good practice in the field of child psychotherapy. Jim Richards said "The continuation of this work will be the greatest tribute we can offer Bishop Harvey in ensuring that the service he worked so hard to build and held so dear, will be available to future generations of children and families".
