Cambridge students vote against abortion campaign

Cambridge University Students Union voted against affiliation to the National Abortion Campaign by a two to one majority on Thursday. A total of 5640 students voted with 3341 rejecting affiliation, 1827 voting for affiliation and 472 abstaining. "This massive turnout, four times greater than expected, indicates how strongly students object to affiliation to this extremist political organisation," said Catholic student Beata Klepacka. "I am delighted that this attempt by the pro-abortion lobby to impose its views on all Cambridge students has been overwhelmingly defeated." She added: "The Universities of East Anglia, York, and Warwick also recently voted against NAC affiliation; it's time the National Union of Students brought its policy into line with current student opinion by adopting a neutral policy on abortion. "The debate during the run-up to the referendum has raised awareness of the difficulties faced by pregnant students. I hope that the CU pro-life society can now work with the Women's Campaign to help improve facilities for pregnant students."
