Christians meet New Agers at Glastonbury
A Christian Youth Festival is taking place at Glastonbury this weekend. Youth 2000 are holding a retreat with a 40-hour prayer vigil at St Mary's Church in Magdalene Street.
The ancient pilgrimage centre is better known these days for the annual rock and folk music festival. A highlight of the weekend will be a Eucharistic procession through the streets at 2.30pm.
Clare Ward, from Youth 2000 said: "It sounds like the most crazy thing for any young person to do. We'll be walking by all the shops selling pagan and New Age gear. But somehow I think we have more in common then we realise."
The Glastonbury event is just one of many planned by Youth 2000 during this millennium year, Clare explained. "The idea is to have an event for young people in every diocese." Major forthcoming events include World Youth Day in Rome on the 15-21 August and a festival in Walsingham from 24-28 August.
