Striking and moving prints of the Passion story executed in the 1930s by the Anglo-Canadian print maker, Sybil Andrews, are to be sold at Bonhams ‘The Grosvenor School and Avant-Garde British Printmaking’ sale in London on 17 April.

The stark Golgotha (shown on the headline page) contrasts with the gentler and more rounded image of Joseph and Nicodemus bearing away the body of Christ from the Cross for burial.

Andrews was one of the foremost British print makers of the 20th century. Although not overtly religious she returned to the theme of the Crucifixion many times and in the 1940s and 50s produced a complete Stations of the Cross one of which, In Manus Tuas Domini: Station XII, is also in the Bonhams sale.

Born in Bury St Edmunds in 1898, Andrews moved to Canada after the Second World War where she took the nationality of her Canadian husband. She died in 1993.
