Events will be taking place around the world this weekend to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. One small village in the west of Ireland has particular reason to mourn. Of the 113 steerage passengers that boarded Titanic at Queenstown (Cobh) in Cork, 14 came from Addergoole Parish (Lahardane) in Co Mayo. Eleven of these fourteen died.

These Titanic passengers are known locally as the Addergoole Fourteen. The three who survived were; Annie Kate Kelly, Delia McDermott, Annie McGowan.

The 11 who perished were; Catherine Bourke, John Bourke, Mary Bourke, Mary Canavan, Pat Canavan, Bridget Donohue, Nora Fleming, James Flynn, Catherine McGowan, Delia Mahon, Mary Mangan.

The Addergoole Titanic Society believes that the loss of these 11 lives represents the largest proportionate loss of life from any locality on RMS Titanic. In 1911, the year before the Titanic sank, the population of the Addergoole was just 3,496 people living in 703 houses according to the Irish census. This was an extraordinary loss for a small parish. A commemorative plaque in St Patrick's Church, erected by the Addergoole Titanic Society names those who were lost. Elsewhere in Ireland, a special outdoor Mass will take place in Boher in Westmeath at 3pm on Sunday to remember a local man, Pat Fox, who died in the tragedy. Mr Fox was working in America and had come back to Ireland for a short visit. He was 28. A plaque on the wall of the field where the Fox house stood, says: 'Birthplace of Pat Fox, died on the Titanic'.

Other Westmeath lives lost on the Titanic, included Miss Mary Kelly from Castlepollard, a 23-year-old who, like Pat, was travelling third class and who also paid the fee of £7-15s for her ticket.

An entire Athlone family was also lost in the tragedy - Margaret Rice, with her sons, Eugene, George Hugh, Albert, Eric, Arthur and George Frederick Thomas.

In Belfast there are a number of services planned for victims of the Titanic. On Sunday, a special Requiem Mass will take place at St Peter's Cathedral. Telephone:+44 (0)28 9024 6609 for more details.
