Chester: Lord Carey of Clifton to address service for Christian unity

Chester Cathedral

Chester Cathedral

Lord Carey of Clifton, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, will be guest speaker at an annual ecumenical service in the Diocese of Shrewsbury on Sunday, 19 January, as part of the Week of Christian Unity. Lord Carey will preach on the theme 'Is Christ Divided' in Chester Cathedral. The Christian unity service will begin at 3.30pm. All are welcome to attend. The event is being organised by Churches Together in Cheshire.

As well as prayers for Christian unity, there will be a children’s choir from Crewe, comprising pupils from the Cheshire town’s Catholic schools, St Mary’s Primary and St Thomas More High School.

At the Cathedral service there will be three readings from the Bible, by David Edwards of the New Testament Church of God in Crewe; Hilary Atkins of the Storehouse Church in Winsford; and Alison Linfield of the Cheshire Agricultural Chaplaincy.

Rev Andrew Taylor, ecumenical development officer of Churches Together in Cheshire, said: “Churches are often seen as divided and concerned with their own differences but actually we do come together – especially for projects that help local communities. We act as one when we need to – such as currently when we are operating food banks across the county.”

In 2012, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop emeritus of Westminster, preached at the Christian unity service, also held in Chester Cathedral.
