Strong Peace Sunday message at north London church
Peace Sunday (19 January) was marked by parishioners at St Mellitus in Tollington Park, north London, with a giant banner on the front of their church calling for the government not to renew the Trident nuclear weapons system and instead spend more on jobs, education and health.
Jeremy Corbyn, MP for Islington North, said: "Well done St Mellitus for asking the government not to spend money on weapons of mass destruction which can only kill and destroy, and instead calling for funding for much-needed jobs, education and the health service.
Sharon Carroll, who was with her husband Sean and granddaughter Trudy, said: "We're here because we are concerned about the future for our children and generations to come. What sort of world are we leaving for them?"
Parishoner Bruce Kent, who is assistant secretary of Pax Christi said: "I am delighted to see this clear moral message on a church on Peace Sunday."
