Southwark: CAFOD partner to talk about impact of climate change in Kenya
CAFOD is inviting the people of the South East to hear first-hand about the impact that the changing climate is having on a community it works with in Kenya. They will also find out what they can do in the South East to lessen the effects both here and overseas.
Antony Mbandi, who works for a CAFOD partner organisation in Kenya, is visiting London on Thursday 10 July as CAFOD prepares to launch a new campaign on climate change in September. Antony will talk at Romero Hall, Lambeth about the daily impact climate change is having on his community in Kitui, Southern Kenya, where unpredictable rains and drought are becoming more commonplace, making it hard for people to grow food and access clean water.
Antony works closely with the Catholic aid agency CAFOD to deliver sustainable energy projects which are transforming people’s lives; using solar power to provide safe, reliable energy for health centres, grow food and provide clean water.
CAFOD’s manager for the Westminster Diocese Tony Sheen, said: “Climate change is not just a problem for countries overseas, or something that happens to someone else far away. Climate change will affect something that all of us love, and we’ve all got the power to tackle it, which is why we have to work together around the world to lessen the impact.
“We’re privileged to have Antony with us to give us a clear idea of what is happening now because of a changing climate, how climate change is affecting efforts to reduce poverty and to start a discussion about what people in the South East can do, to prevent climate change increasingly impacting the UK and pushing people overseas deeper into poverty.”
The event will take place on Thursday 10 July between 6pm-9pm at Amigo Hall, St George’s Cathedral, Corner of St George’s Road and Lambeth Road, London, SE1 6HR.
