Tonight: Archbishop Longley to preach at service on anniversary of execution of St Thomas More
The Most Reverend Bernard Longley, Archbishop of Birmingham, will be the preacher this evening at a special Choral Evensong, in Temple Church in London on the anniversary of the execution of Saint Thomas More in 1535. The service begins at 5.45pm.
As a student lawyer at Lincoln's Inn, St Thomas More would have been familiar with Temple Church. This is the church of the Inner and Middle Temple, two of England's four ancient societies of lawyers, the Inns of Court.
The Church was built by the Knights Templar, the order of monks founded to protect pilgrims on their way to and from Jerusalem in the 12th century. It is located between Fleet Street and the River Thames.
