Ireland: Congratulations to Maryvale Institute's new catechists
On Saturday 27th February, Maryvale Institute's first cohort of 27 Irish students, from the dioceses of Cork and Ross and Cloyne, were awarded the Maryvale Certificate in Catechesis, after completing two years of study. The awards were presented by Bishops John Buckley of Cork and Ross and William Crean of Cloyne, who then commissioned the catechists to work in their respective dioceses. The ceremonies were attended by the Director of Maryvale, Fr Edward Clare and the Institute's Director of Further Education programmes, Dr Marie Cooke, who had acted as tutor to the catechists throughout their two years of study.
There is a great need for qualified lay catechists in Ireland and this course was the first to be run there by Maryvale in partnership with a diocese. Plans are already underway for further courses, and Maryvale is in discussion to run similar programmes elsewhere in other Irish dioceses.
