International Children's Day 1: Pope asks for prayers for young Syrians

Pope Francis urged the faithful to join in prayer on this coming Wednesday, June 1st, International Children's Day, with a special thought for the children in Syria.

Speaking after the Angelus Prayer in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican on Sunday, the Holy Father said the day will be particularly significant for Christian communities in Syria. Catholic and Orthodox parishes and communities across the war-torn country will be holding special services for children with prayers for peace.

"Syrian children invite children of the world to join them in their prayer for peace" Pope Francis said.

The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland, proclaimed June 1 to be International Children's Day in 1925. The day is marked in dozens of countries around the world with speeches on children's rights and wellbeing, and other events involving or dedicated to children.
