Cyclone: Jesuits launch emergency appeal
Jesuit Missions has launched an emergency appeal to support their partners in Southern Africa in response to one of the worst climate-related disasters to affect the Southern hemisphere. Jesuit Missions is in touch with their partners in Southern Africa as they assess the needs of local communities. The Jesuits have been present in these countries for many decades. They have the confidence of the local people and the experience to accompany them as they recover from this tragedy.
Fr Chiedza Chimhanda SJ, Jesuit provincial for Zimbabwe-Mozambique says:
"The situation throughout Southern Africa is critical, with many areas submerged and towns and villages destroyed. We have heard that the Jesuits who live in Beira, Mozambique, are all safe, but we have since lost communication with them. Most of the buildings in this city have been damaged and it could be a few days before we fully understand the impact and scale of this disaster. I'd like to thank you for your generosity in supporting your brothers and sisters in need".
Southern Africa has already been coping with a chronic food shortage for much of this year and, once again, it is the poorest people who are most affected.
Jesuit Missions will be supporting their partners during this emergency disaster and in the following months to help rebuild lives and livelihoods.
