Today's Gospel in Art: You must love the Lord your God with all your heart
Gospel of 23rd August 2019 - Matthew 22: 34-40
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?' Jesus said, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.'
Reflection on the Sculpture
And so today we come to the Gospel reading at the very 'heart' of our faith: we must love the Lord with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds; and we must love our neighbours as yourselves. The greatest commandment is love. Nothing is more important than loving God and also loving others. Truly living this commandment to love has far reaching consequences, as it calls us to be kind to everyone we meet, be generous to those less well off, to take time to pray to God regularly throughout the day, etc… Living this commandment affects everything we do. To love God is to love my neighbour and to truly love my neighbour is to love God!
