Churches expand Corporate Engagement Capabilities

Source: ECCR

The Church Commissioners of the Church of England announced this week the expansion of their corporate engagement team as the Commissioners continue their ambitious plans to influence companies on high profile ethical issues. New staff have been brought in who have expertise on sustainable development and on environmental and human rights law. They will be based in Church House, Westminster.

The Commissioners' key focus is climate change and ensuring that companies align their strategies with the requirements of the Paris Agreement. Key priorities also include the environmental & social performance of extractive industries, human rights, corporate tax, responsible alcohol marketing, executive remuneration & diversity. In 2018 the Commissioners' in-house engagement team engaged directly with 78 companies through 107 engagement interactions.

Other news from the September newsletter of the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility (ECCR) reviews the recent climate strikes. It says in its editorial: "It's been a remarkable month - the political uncertainty, the Prime Minister being found to have acted unlawfully in suspending parliament, the global Climate Strikes, Greta Thunberg's "How Dare You" speech at the UN Climate Action Summit and the collapse of the UK's oldest travel company to name a few. If the events of this last month have inspired you to think about how you can make a positive difference, read on for some ways you can take action to make a change and support us as we try to do the same."

The newsletter highlights that of all the money invested in the UK nearly half comes from Pension Savings. Readers are encouraged to check that their pensions are not contributing to a world of social and climate breakdown, for example being invested in fossil fuels. The money could be used to build a more positive future.

An 'Ethical Money' event is being held on 5 October at the City of Edinburgh Methodist Church. It is a free event, organised by the Church of Scotland, "to help you connect your faith and values to your finances, so your money can help ensure a more just and sustainable world". There will be stalls from a wide variety of organisations, including ECCR, and optional interactive workshops.
