Cardinal Vincent has received a letter of thanks from Pope Emeritus Benedict for the gift of the reflections and meditations of St John Henry Newman. The Cardinal had written to the Pope Emeritus last month to thank him on the tenth anniversary of his remarkable visit to the UK in 2010 when he beatified St John Henry Newman during an open-air Mass at Crofton Park. Accompanying the Cardinal's letter was a gift of the reflections and meditations of St John Henry Newman, for whom Pope Benedict XVI has expressed admiration over the years.
In his letter, the Pope Emeritus also invoked God's blessing on the Cardinal, the bishops, the Catholic Church and the people of this country.
The four-day visit in 2010 was the first state visit by a Pope to the United Kingdom (Pope St John Paul II made a pastoral visit in 1982). It began in Edinburgh, where Pope Benedict XVI was welcomed by Her Majesty The Queen.
