And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull), they offered him wine to drink, mingled with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots; then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
Reflection on the Painting
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Jesus, You were stripped of Your garments, exposed to shame. I am looking on how they ridicule You, how the crowds insult You, how harsh the soldiers are to You… but You don't complain. You endure everything for me.
As the clothes are torn from You, I see Your scars, Your wounds. An image of sorrows. But You don't complain, not a word. I feel foolish about all the times I have complained about small things and made excuses.
Lord strip me of my pride, strip me of my self-centeredness.
Clothe me with Your love. Clothe me with Your compassion.
Our Father, who art in heaven…
Hail Mary, full of grace…
Glory Be to the Father and to the Son…
(Normal Gospel reading for the day: John 12:1-11)
