2nd April 2021 - John 19:41-42

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Reflection on the Painting

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.

Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Your body is laid in the tomb on a cold stone slab with a jar of ointment beside You. Your Mother, Saint John and Mary Magdalene are beside You, weeping. They are lost in the cold solitude of the tomb. Your disciples are not there, yet their faith begins to deepen at precisely this moment. Now they remember all the things You told them before. They were told so much and never quite understood. I am told so much in the Gospels, but never quite understand.

But for now, I am there with You in the tomb, at Your feet. I see the open wounds. Mary Magdalene washed these feet with her tears and hair, as an act of humility and a plea for forgiveness. My tears of sadness now also fall onto these same feet.

This is the time to mourn as you are about to be wrapped in the white fabric that lies on you. You have to rest…. as soon, we will be witnesses of Your resurrection.

Our Father, who art in heaven…

Hail Mary, full of grace…

Glory Be to the Father and to the Son…

(Normal Gospel reading for the day: John 18:1-19:42)
