Nottingham: Church needs Caritas now more than ever

On the eve of the launch of Caritas in the Diocese of Nottingham, Bishop Patrick McKinney said: "The launch of Caritas in Nottingham Diocese could not have come at a better time. Now more than ever, the Church needs a network to reconnect individuals who have been forced to fragment during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Through Caritas we are witnessing a revived passion for outward looking Christianity; for the growth of missionary discipleship throughout the diocese. May Almighty God pour out his blessings on this vital initiative."

Caritas in the Diocese of Nottingham is a movement in the region, designed to bring the church's charitable mission closer to home.

Paul Bodenham, Programme Leader for Social Action in the diocese, said that Caritas was about "living our faith in daily life, in our communities and in the world."

"Caritas is about encouraging people to let their dreams for a better world come to light and one of the things that I hope people find through Caritas is connection with each other. With those connections they will then gain the confidence to act from their faith in the wider world."

Following its launch, Caritas will be dedicated to supporting those in poverty including individuals who are facing homelessness.

After Covid 19, Paul Bodenham said that the most pressing priority for Caritas was helping the Church to reduce its carbon footprint and to rebuild the bonds of social friendship following the corrosive effect of social distancing.
