Today, Wednesday 25 August, Brazil's supreme court (STF) was expected to start ruling on a landmark case that will affect the future of thousands of indigenous lives in Brazil. The 'Marco Temporal', or 'Time Limit Trick' case, will rule on claims that indigenous peoples must have lived on their land when Brazil's constitution was signed (5 Oct 1988) to have rights to their ancestral lands. If approved, the case will have devastating consequences, including huge challenges to reclaim ancestral territories; theft of land and evictions; and accelerated environmental destruction.
The protest in London was part of international protests, calling for the protection of the dozens of indigenous peoples and territories that are at risk. The demonstration was organised by CAFOD, Amazon Rebellion, Brazil Matters, Greenpeace, Parents for the Future and Survival International, in solidarity with the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil (APIB), to oppose the ruling and call for indigenous rights to be guaranteed.
