Pet Blessing in west London

Two hundred and eighty five parishioners and assorted pets attended Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary church in Staines on Sunday, for a special annual Blessing of Pets, in honour of St Francis, whose Feast we celebrated recently. It also coincided with our patronal feast of Our Lady.
Among the animal congregation were dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, a tortoise, and a dwarf Russian hamster.
Parishioner Karen Hart said: "It was indeed a most splendid celebration. Thank you so much Fr Philip, and thank you everyone for bringing the other members of your family along, they were so well behaved."
Today's blessing of the animals reminded us that respect for God's creation is part of what it means to be human. The way we feel about our dogs, cats, guinea pigs and other animals is a reflection of our God-given humanity. We don't just value these animals because of what they give us (and they give us plenty), but because, like us, they are God's beloved creatures - and are worthy of a respect that matches their dignity.
Parish Priest Father Philip Dyer Perry commented: "Our pets and animals are so precious to us - which is why we invited them to join us for Mass, the high point of our parish life."
