Palestinian movie collection on Netflix
Netflix has recently launched a new collection: 'Palestinian Stories', consisting of 32 films and documentaries either made by Palestinian filmmakers or dealing with Palestinian stories.
The series includes:
'Ave Maria' - The comic Oscar-nominated story of an encounter between an illegal settler family and a convent of silent nuns. On a drive through the West Bank the settlers need to ask the sisters for help, after they have accidentally crashed into and beheaded the sisters' statue of Our Lady.
The Present - This BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated short film is the directorial debut from Palestinian-British filmmaker Farah Nabulsi. Starring:Saleh Bakri, Maryam Kanj, Maryam Kamiel Basha, the film follows Yusuf and his daughter as they set out to buy his wife an anniversary gift, a gesture demanding much patience and negotiation skills in the West Bank.
Maradona's Legs - During the 1990 World Cup, two young Palestinian football fans set out to find the last missing piece of their sticker album and win an Atari.
'The Crossing' - directed by May Odeh. Three Palestinian siblings eagerly attempt to visit their bedridden grandfather who resides on the other side of the Separation Wall. Starring: Motaz Malhees, Yara Elham Jarrar, Nicholas Jarad.
Giraffada - Described a 'family feature. After an air raid kills a male giraffe in the West Bank's only zoo, a vet and his son embark on a journey to find a companion for the surviving mate. Starring: Saleh Bakri, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, Ahmad Bayatra.
3000 Nights - Wrongly accused, a Palestinian newlywed is incarcerated in an Israeli high-security prison and soon discovers that she's pregnant. Based on real events. Starring: Maisa Abd Elhadi, Nadera Omran and Abeer Haddad.
Many of the films and documentaries are centred around stories of ordinary Palestinians under Israeli occupation.
