Professor Anna Rowlands to give Sir Harold Hood Memorial Lecture

Professor Anna Rowlands

Professor Anna Rowlands

Many of us feel as if we are living in dark times. People who have been in prison speak of their time inside as being a time of darkness, in which they felt stripped of their dignity. How can we reimagine the idea of dignity for our times, and for places associated with the criminal justice system? That is the question being addressed by Professor Anna Rowlands at this year's Sir Harold Hood Memorial Lecture hosted by Pact, the Prison Advice and Care Trust.

The Sir Harold Hood Memorial Lecture is always an occasion that delivers. Do join us on Thursday, 24 February, 6-8.30pm at Westminster Cathedral Hall.

Those who have been reading Professor Rowlands' new book, Towards a Politics of Communion, may be glad to hear more. Pact trustees, Cleo Metcalf and Paula Harriott, women with lived experience of the criminal justice system, will also be joining Anna for what will surely be a well-articulated panel discussion.

There will be a spoken word poetry performance by former prisoner and Pact volunteer, Lewis Gibson. We are premiering our short film 'Redemption Stories' in which two former prisoners talk movingly about their lives and their faith.

We are delighted that a canape reception will be provided by The Clink Charity. 'The Clink provides bespoke catering beyond the walls of the prison and provides the prisoners in training the opportunity to gain experience in event catering'.

Pact is the national Catholic prison charity. The Sir Harold Hood Memorial Lecture is held by Pact as an opportunity to celebrate the life and memory of a great friend and champion, the late Sir Harold Hood. The lecture contributes to public knowledge and understanding of how we can make prisons places in which individuals can achieve personal change and growth, and leave to live good lives, in stable and healthy relationships with family and the wider community.

Sir Harold Hood, 2nd Baronet (23 January 1916 - 5 September 2005) was a devout Catholic Christian who worked in Catholic publishing for much of his life, including working on the Catholic Herald and The Universe newspapers. He was a generous philanthropist with a keen interest in prison reform and prisoner rehabilitation and was personally involved with many charities including Pact. Sir Harold Hood was a Knight of Malta and a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Gregory the Great. He died aged 89. His family have continued to support the work of Pact and a number of other charities through the charitable trust founded in his name.

This is an in-person event kindly sponsored by the Sir Harold Hood Charitable Trust and CCLA Investment Management.
